Lara Croft Reboot Is On The Move

I’ve been a Tomb Raider fan since its inception. I credit the first game with bringing me back into gaming after my chosen genre, adventure games, suffered a decline (which ultimately became its death, for all intents and purposes). Since that time, I’ve purchased every version of Tomb Raider, up until and including its most recent incarnation, which dealt with the character’s origins as a teenaged girl. I loved this new Lara with an unequaled fervor. And I’ve been waiting patiently (or not so patiently, as the case may be) for the next game in the series and also for a new film version that would go back to Lara’s roots, just as the game franchise has done.

tomb_raider_posterDon’t get me wrong, I like the Angelina Jolie version (well, the first one, at least). At the time, she was the perfect Lara Croft. Shoot, I even had the official movie poster on my wall for a long time (I mean, look at it; it’s awesome). But it has been so long since Lara Croft Tomb Raider: the Cradle of Life (a cumbersome title if I ever saw one) was in theaters. I definitely think it’s time to give a new actress a chance. And the reinvented, younger, more inexperienced Lara is a perfect way to do just that. Plus, there are so many great actresses to choose from right now. I could probably write pages talking about the exciting casting possibilities. But I won’t.

Today, an article in Deadline has stated that a screenwriter has finally been assigned to pen the new movie. According to the article, Evan Daugherty has the job. To me, this is both good news and maybe bad news. The good news is that the reboot definitely seems to be going forward. Awesome. I couldn’t be more thrilled. The bad news, to me, is that Daugherty has some mixed credits to his name. This is the guy who co-wrote Michael Bay’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. But he also helped write Divergent and Snow White and the Huntsman, both of which I liked. So, I’m tepidly hopeful.

What do you guys think? Is Daugherty a good choice? Do you even care that they’re making a new Tomb Raider flick? If not, why don’t you care? Lara Croft is awesome!
